چکیده

In the South African sugar industry it is important that relatively inexpensive but viable drainage systems are de,:el,oped for those soils which have a low hydraulic conductrvity. From the results offield and laboratory investigations conducted during the past five years it appears that the use of unlined mole channels as an alternative for, or a supplement to conventional subsurface drainage, could be considered. Mole drainage is more successful in the heavy Rensburg and Willowbrook soil forms than in the variable duplex soils such as those of the Kroonstad and Longlands forms. The factors of slope, antecedent and current soil moisture content, soil bulk density, and soil type are important in determining the success of the installation and performance of a mole drainage system. Various guidelines are outlined for the use of mole drainage in the sugar industry.

The Use of a Sand Envelope for Subsurface Drainage within the South African Sugar

Sand envelopes have often been used in conjunction with conventional subsurface pipes to improve the drainage of soils in the sugar industry. The expense and effort required to implement these are only justified if this practice results in significantly improved drainage, and it was therefore important to establish whether a sand envelope is effective in all soils. Four observation trials were ...

Evaluating the Growth and Evolution of Facility Management in Innovating Integrating and Aligning Business Strategies to Achieve a Competitive Advantage

The South African Facilities Management (FM) industry has seen increased operational strategy complexity from single-site contractors providing basic janitorial services to highly integrated and bundled FM service providers.  Despite these major changes, very little research has been conducted on evaluating the effectiveness of FM in innovating, integrating and aligning business strategies to a...

An Integrated System for Soil Indentification in the South African Sugar Industry

Soils of the South African sugar industry were first mapped on the basis of soil parent material and were subsequently grouped into forms and series in the binomial system. An integrated system incorporating both these methods has now been developed to enable the cane grower to identify his soils without difficulty. Introduction In South Africa, sugarcane is grown under a range of climatic and ...

Performance evaluation of groundwater drainage in two types of PP450 synthetic filters and natural filtering in Sugarcane Farms: A Case Study of Salman Farsi Cultivation and Industry

Sand coverings account for a large part of the cost of a project. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of different coatings for filtration of underground drains and reduce the cost of cornfield farms. The experiments were carried out in farm in Salman Farsi. The subsoil drainage was fitted to each test piece with a length of 120 meters, a diameter of 100 mm, and a distance ...
